Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- First carve the holes for the knobs and the shapes in the top board, then all outlines.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Lightly break the edges with sandpaper (grit 120, then 240) and remove burrs.
Assembly and final touches
- Glue the top board flush onto the base board and press. Glue a 2 cm piece of dowel into each shape as a knob.
- Round all edges well so nothing splinters, and only use saliva-resistant paints or oils. Do not make the shapes smaller than 35 mm: small parts can be swallowed.
- Finally oil, wax or varnish; for toys use oils or varnishes that are saliva-resistant according to EN 71-3.
