Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
2Deep groove ball bearing (bore × outer diameter × width) 8 × 22 × 7 mm (608)
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. First mill a test piece with one bearing seat and press the bearing in: it should go in with your thumb or a clamp and then sit firmly. Too tight: increase the fit by 0.02 mm; too loose: decrease it.
  3. Mill the bearing seats, mortises and hub holes, then cut out the base, cheeks, hubs and flanges.
  4. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Press the bearings into the cheeks and glue the cheeks into the base. Glue one hub centred onto each flange.
  2. Put the roll between the two hubs and push the dowel through bearings, hubs and roll; the hubs sit tight on the dowel.
  3. The roll must run easily without wobbling; the largest roll has a diameter of twice the axle height minus 10 mm.
