| 3 | Wood screws 4 × 35 mm with wall plugs |
| 1 | Wood glue (water-resistant D3) |
Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- First the mortises, then carve the outlines with the slots. For 18 mm stock use an end mill with at least 20 mm flute length.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.
Assembly and final touches
- Push the tenons of the shelf into the upper mortises of the back, then the two brackets from below into shelf and back. A little glue in the mortises makes it permanent.
- Screw the back to the wall with three screws and plugs, levelling the shelf with a spirit level.
- Finally oil, wax or varnish; for toys use oils or varnishes that are saliva-resistant according to EN 71-3.
