Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 6 mm
1Wood paints or acrylic paints

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave the lines and colour names, clear the black areas of the Benham disc 0.6 mm deep, then carve the axle holes and discs.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Lightly break the edges with sandpaper (grit 120, then 240) and remove burrs.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Newton disc: paint the seven fields in the engraved colours. Benham disc: paint the cleared areas black, the rest stays light (with a laser they turn dark by themselves).
  2. Sharpen one end of a 60 mm long 6 mm dowel and push it firmly through the centre hole, the tip 15 mm below the disc.
  3. Spin hard: the Newton disc turns light grey instead of colourful; on the Benham disc coloured rings appear that swap order when spun the other way.
