Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- Carve the axle holes and crank hole, engrave the tooth count, then cut out the gears with the 2 mm end mill and the base plate.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Only deburr the tooth flanks lightly, do not round them: the involute ensures smooth rolling.
Assembly and final touches
- Push two 8 mm dowels (30 mm long each) firmly into the base plate and fit the gears; they turn freely on the axles.
- Glue a 6 mm dowel into the small hole of the driving gear as a crank. Turn and count: how often does the large gear turn when the small one makes one revolution? In which direction?
