Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- Clear the channels with the 6 mm end mill, then cut out the tiles.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Break the channel edges with sandpaper so the marbles do not catch at the joins.
Assembly and final touches
- Tilt a large board or tray by 3 to 5 degrees (a book under one side), lay the tiles edge to edge on it and release the marble at the start.
- Experiment: how steep must the board be for the marble to get round the curve? How does the time to the finish change?
- Finally oil, wax or varnish; for toys use oils or varnishes that are saliva-resistant according to EN 71-3.
