Geneva drive (Maltese cross)

Preview of the CNC template “Geneva drive (Maltese cross)”

Intermittent drive as in old film projectors and clocks: a crank with a pin advances the cross by a quarter turn on every revolution and locks it in between.

Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
1Wood glue (water-resistant D3)

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Carve the holes, engrave the pin marking and cut out all parts: base plate, cross, crank disc, locking disc and spacer.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Lightly break the edges with sandpaper (grit 120, then 240) and remove burrs.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Glue the locking disc onto the crank disc so that its cut-out points to the engraved marking; the centre holes must line up exactly (a dowel helps with alignment).
  2. Glue a piece of 8 mm dowel into the hole at the marking as the drive pin, standing 10 mm above the locking disc, and a second one opposite as a handle.
  3. Push two 8 mm dowels into the base plate. Put the crank on one axle, and on the other first the spacer and then the cross. Turn slowly: the pin enters a slot and turns the cross by 90°, then the locking disc holds it.
