Pantograph for enlarging

Preview of the CNC template “Pantograph for enlarging”

Pantograph of four drilled bars: trace a picture with the tracer and the pencil draws it two, three or four times as large. The holes for each scale are labelled, the joints are dowels.

Build instructions

Materials and accessories

QtyPart
1Beech dowel rod 8 mm
2Wood screws 4 × 35 mm with wall plugs

Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.

Carving and finishing

  1. Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
  2. Engrave the ratios, mill joint and pen holes, then cut out the four bars and the base block.
  3. Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
  4. Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.

Assembly and final touches

  1. Put bar O–B with end O on the base block and hinge bar B–P at end B. For a scale of 2 : 1 attach bar T–C to hole “2” of O–B and bar T–E to hole “2” of B–P; their free ends meet at T. Likewise for 3 : 1 and 4 : 1.
  2. All joints are dowels with washers, only tight enough to move easily. A pointed dowel goes into T as tracer, a pencil into the large hole at the end of B–P.
  3. Fix the base block to the table with two screws or a clamp. Trace a template with the tracer: the pencil draws it enlarged at the chosen scale.
