Materials and accessories
| Qty | Part |
|---|---|
| 1 | Beech dowel rod 8 mm |
| 1 | Wood glue (water-resistant D3) |
| 1 | Nylon thread or yarn |
Also: sandpaper (grit 120 and 240), a utility knife or fine saw and, for joints, a rubber mallet.
Carving and finishing
- Clamp the workpiece flat on the spoilboard or secure it with double-sided tape, and set the origin as shown in the carving assistant.
- Mill mortises and axle holes, then cut out base, cheeks, drum discs, ratchet wheel, pawl and crank.
- Free the parts at the holding tabs with a utility knife or fine saw and sand the tab remains flush.
- Before gluing, dry-fit everything. If a joint is too tight, increase the clearance by 0.05 mm and carve the part again; if it wobbles, reduce it.
Assembly and final touches
- Glue the cheeks into the base. Push a dowel loosely through both cheeks while fitting the drum: flange, two core discs, flange, all glued tightly.
- Fit the ratchet wheel on the outside and the crank behind it tightly onto the shaft. Put the pawl loosely on a short dowel in the cheek so its tip drops into the teeth from above.
- Knot a rope through the hole in the core and wind it up. Cranking lifts the load; let go and the pawl holds. To lower, lift the pawl and hold the crank.
